William “Howard” Uller, 84, of San Pedro, California, passed away on February 4, 2026. Born June 2, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, he moved to Los Angeles at a young age. He attended University High School in West Los Angeles and later UCLA, where he ran track and met the love of his life, Mitsuye “Mitzi” Hayashi.
Howard earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from UCLA, followed by a Masters in History and Masters of Social Work. He dedicated his professional life to service, spending decades as Director of Toberman Settlement House in San Pedro, working tirelessly on behalf of underserved members of the community. His life’s passion was helping young people leave gang life behind—a mission he continued even after retiring in 2007. Briefly bored with retirement, he tried real estate before returning to the work he loved most.
Howard’s greatest joy was his family. His wife, Mitzi, was a longtime teacher at Victor Elementary School in Torrance, California. Together they raised two sons, Jeffrey and Matthew, and spent many years coaching youth soccer and basketball, mentoring countless local children along the way.
An avid fly fisherman, Howard was a devoted member of the Long Beach Casting Club, where he formed lifelong friendships and helped organize spey casting tournaments that grew to attract international participants. He was also a member of the congregation at Temple Beth El in San Pedro.
Howard is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Ellen) and Matthew (Mikiko); granddaughter, Mia; sister Nancy Benay, and many beloved extended family. He will be remembered for his warmth, his tireless pursuit of social justice, his leadership in San Pedro, his unwavering devotion to UCLA, and his unconditional love for family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Green Hills Chapel on February 11 at 11:30am with a celebration of life to follow. Donations to Toberman Settlement House in lieu of flowers.
