Whitman Earl
Ballenger
Aug 9, 1966 — Jun 3, 2026
Whitman Earl Ballenger was born on August 9, 1966, in Los Angeles, California, to Whitman Maurice and Wanda Sue Ballenger. The youngest of two sons, he was raised in the warmth of family, faith, and community, values that would define him for the rest of his life.
Whitman gave his heart to Jesus Christ at a very early age. Even as a preschooler, his calling was clear: he would slip on his yellow raincoat as a robe, gather the neighborhood children, and hold church right there in the front yard, always as the preacher. It was a glimpse of the faithful, Spirit-filled man he would become. He began his walk with the Lord at Westside Missionary Baptist Church, where he was baptized, continued to grow through his early adult years at Athens Baptist Church, and later made his home at City of Refuge, where his faith deepened still. Throughout every season of his life, his relationship with God remained his anchor.
He attended President Avenue Elementary School, Perry Jr. High School, and Nathaniel Narbonne Senior High School in Harbor City. He went on to take classes at Harbor Community College and completed a 750-hour Medical Assistant program. Whitman loved music deeply, and was always ready to send a CD to any family member or friend who asked. He and his brother rarely missed a local gospel concert, sharing a bond over the music that moved their souls. He was passionate about wrestling and rarely missed a match when he was able to attend. A beloved fixture in the Palo Del Amo Woods neighborhood where he grew up, Whitman was a familiar and cherished face to all who knew him, and he never missed the community's annual picnic. He had a gift for making people feel seen, loved, and welcomed wherever he went.
His older brother Alonzo Darnell was his best friend, and when Alonzo passed, Whitman carried that loss with him every day, a testament to just how profoundly they were bonded. That love never faded. Whitman is preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Alonzo Darnell, and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted parents, Whitman Maurice (Pops) and Wanda Sue Ballenger of Harbor City, California; his aunts Beverly Collins-Chikasu (Remi) of Rialto, California, and Brenda Stevenson of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of loving family and friends whose lives are richer for having known him. Whitman touched every room he entered, and his spirit, his laughter, and his faith will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
