Westley "Bunny" Sholes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, healthcare executive, and public health advocate, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 86.

Born March 21, 1940, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Westley Sholes Sr. and Dorothy Sholes, Westley was raised in a home that emphasized education, faith, and service. After graduating from Walter L. Cohen Senior High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1960 before moving to Los Angeles, where he would spend the remainder of his career. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Westley retired as Deputy Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services following a distinguished career spanning more than sixty years in healthcare. Among his many accomplishments, he helped develop Los Angeles County's first Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and became widely respected for his leadership, innovation, and commitment to improving public health.

His service extended far beyond government. He served for more than twenty-five years on the Board of Directors of SRO Housing Corporation, contributed to numerous cancer research initiatives through UCLA and the American Association for Cancer Research, supported the Movember Global Scientific Community and UCLA's Prostate SCORE Program, and worked tirelessly to advance health equity through the National Association of Black County Officials.

Westley was also deeply devoted to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. As the first member initiated into the Zeta Rho Graduate Chapter, he dedicated decades to mentoring brothers, promoting health awareness, and strengthening community partnerships.

Those who knew Westley remember not only his accomplishments but his unmistakable personality. He had a sharp wit, spoke honestly, and never hesitated to share his opinion. His candor was matched only by his generosity. Beneath his direct manner was a heart devoted to helping others succeed.

Outside of work, Westley found joy in traveling the world with his beloved wife, Jacqueline, fishing, sailing, aviation, and spending time with family. Married for 62 years, Westley and Jackie built a life rooted in love, partnership, and adventure.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Sholes; his daughter, Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas, and her husband, Errol Douglas; grandchildren Khalib and Moe Douglas and a wide circle of family, friends, fraternity brothers, colleagues, and community members.

When asked what song he wanted to hear at the time of his transition, Frank Sinatra's My Way was his choice. —a fitting tribute to a man who lived with conviction, served with purpose, and remained true to himself throughout his remarkable life.
