Listen to Obituary

Virginia Irene Alcala Zamarripa Sausedo, our beloved mother, grandmother and aunt, passed away peacefully just days shy of her 98th birthday. Virginia was a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) for 27 years at Kaiser Harbor City Post-Partum Department (16 years) and Carson Inter-Community Hospital (11 years). She graduated from Harbor College in1970 with her certificate in nursing.

Virginia was born in San Pedro to Cornelio Alcala & Victoria Villasana, and over her lifetime resided in East Los Angeles, San Pedro and lastly, for 53 years in Wilmington. She attended Barton Hill Elementary in San Pedro and San Pedro High School until she started working in the canneries at the age of sixteen. She worked for Pena’s Delicatessen in Wilmington for many years until she studied and graduated as an LVN. She retired from nursing in 1993, working over 50 years in total in her lifetime.

Virginia had one sister, Angelina Alcala Aldrete (deceased). She had two daughters, Christine Zamarripa Nieto and Elena Zamarripa Gonzalez (deceased); 6 grandchildren [Jennifer Bernal Netro & her husband, Milo, Adam Gonzalez (deceased), Andrew Nieto, Josette Nieto-Ramos & her husband, Manuel Ramos]; and 7 Great-Grandchildren (Ruben Netro, Anthony Netro, Jonathan Netro, Isabella Netro, Elijah Ramos, Mikey Nieto & Skylar Ramos).

Virginia survived two husbands: Robert Zamarripa (married from 1949 until his death in 1965) and Florencio Sausedo (married from 1972 until his death in 1997).

Virginia had many challenges in her life after major losses: both parents at a young age, her daughter Elena, her grandson Adam, her only sister Angie and two husbands, but she always had a keep-going spirit and a sunny outlook. She cherished her family and showered them with unconditional love. She loved to attend all the school plays, musical recitals, birthday parties, soccer games, baseball games, graduations, and any family occasion. She never hesitated to sit with you during your personal crisis or loss, but she was also excited to celebrate your special accomplishments & happy moments. She always looked for, and only saw, the best in people. She was truly one of a kind and the glue that held our family together. She is irreplaceable and will be so missed by her immediate and extended family. Rest in peace, enjoy your heavenly reunions and continue watching over the family. We love you.
