Thomas S. Butler jr, 87,passed away July 26th following a long illness. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Joan, and his daughter Hazel, he is survived by his wife Allene (‘Scotty’), brother-in-law Bill Haizlip, his niece JoAnn (Terry) Green, Nephew Butch (Vickie) Goodman and a number of grandnieces and nephews.

Born in Los Angeles, he spent his adult life in Southern California, moving to San Pedro in 1984. As a life-long learner, he received his PhD degree from USC, long after he retired from 43 years of government service with CalTrans, CalOSHA, and the LA Metropolitan Water District. As a dedicated Safety Professional, he maintained his CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and found a second calling, teaching Safety and Accident Investigation for Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. His teaching career was improved by his public speaking practice at San Pedro Toastmasters meetings.

Services will be held Friday, August 14th, at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro. Bring a memory to share. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Hazel St. Claire Butler Scholarship at Cal State Long Beach, or the City of Hope.
