Sung Young Oh, a deeply beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home in Torrance, California, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, after a battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by his family, held in love and comfort during his final hours, having clung to life with remarkable strength and spirit.
Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1940, Dr. Oh relocated during the Korean War. He graduated from Daejeon High School and went on to earn his DDS, MS, and PhD from Seoul National University. He practiced dentistry in Seoul, where he married his wife, Yang Sun, in 1968. In 1976, he immigrated to the United States with Yang Sun and their three children—Julie, Kenneth, and Joon—continuing his dental career for more than forty years.
Dr. Oh was a man of many passions. He found joy in golf, tennis, and baduk, and had a keen eye for photography. He avidly collected violins and antique cameras, appreciated music, and treasured time spent with family and friends. His vibrant pursuits were only slowed by the COVID-19 pandemic and his declining mobility in later years.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Yang Sun; their children Julie (Neel), Kenneth (Junemi), and Joon; and four cherished grandsons: Tae-Jin, Alex, Sun-Jin, and Anderson.
A funeral service will be held at The Mortuary at Green Hills Memorial Chapel on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, the family kindly requests that you honor Dr. Oh’s memory in your own meaningful way.
