On Thursday August 20, 2026, Su Chu (Wang) Tso passed peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones in her home in Torrance, CA at the age of 91.

Su was born August 20, 1935, in Shanxi Province in China, one of nine children. She lived through the war-torn years, including the Japanese occupation of China and subsequent Communist Party takeover. Her family fled to Taiwan where she grew up and completed her B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Cheng Kung University in 1957.

She was a pioneer, one of the early waves of female students of Chinese descent who came to the US to complete their advanced education and became a productive professional fueling the growth of scientific progress in the US.

She earned her master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from Wellesley College in 1961 and her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from New York University in 1969.

During her career she worked as an organic chemist for companies such as Celanese in NY and KY, Union Carbide in WV, and United Catalyst in KY. She owns two patents, one for a clay and one for a paint thickener.

She moved to Maryland in the 90’s where she worked and then retired from the FDA. She subsequently moved to Torrance.

Su is survived by her devoted husband Mark, her son Frank, her daughter Judy, four grandchildren, and her sister Su Lan (Wang) Chen.

Memorial services will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park at 27501 South Western Avenue Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm PST. There will also be visitation time right after the service.
