Sterten Locklin McDonald,”Stu”, much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 96 years old on August 31, 2025 at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California.
Born in Oakland, California, to Helen and Robert McDonald, Stu was especially close to his younger brother, Robert who survives him.
Stu attended the University of California, Berkeley and graduated with a B.S. and an M.B.A. While at Berkeley, he played on the volleyball team and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Following this, he served in the U.S. Army as a commanding officer in Korea. For his service, he received several honors and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps.
Stu was married to his beloved wife, Nila Marie for 42 years until her passing. He often described her as “an adored wife and mother and an inspiration to all that loved her.” Together, they were blessed with two children, Kelley and Steven.
Stu built a proud 35-year career with Atlantic Richfield Company(ARCO), rising through the sales ranks with dedication and integrity. His work took him and his family across California and the country twice, creating lasting memories along the way. When ARCO moved its headquarters to Los Angeles, Stu was honored to serve as Vice President of Marketing Distribution-a role he cherished. He and his family made their final move to Palos Verdes Estates where he found both professional fulfillment and personal joy.
Stu and Nila shared a love of travel, with favorite adventures ranging from a Tanzanian safari to exploring Scandinavia. Stu’s passion for golf took him to Scotland with Steven and to Asia with Nila. They also enjoyed many years at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, where Stu served on the Board of Directors and as President.
Stu is lovingly remembered by his brother, Robert; his daughter, Kelley and her husband, Michael; his son, Steven and his wife, Amy and his treasured granddaughters,Hannah and Shelby, who brought him immense joy.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Stu’s memory are invited to make a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance(OCRA), a cause close to his heart.
