Ruth Tonetta DuBenion was called home to be with the Lord on April 28, 2026, at the remarkable age of 90, surrounded by the love of her family. Strong-willed and resilient by nature, Ruth fought the good fight. After many years of declining health, she peacefully transitioned from this life due to natural causes.
Ruth was born on September 4, 1935, in Lomita, California, to George Mathews Sr. and Ruth (Leavitt) Mathews. She was the fourth of thirteen children, growing up in a large and deeply connected family that helped shape her nurturing spirit and enduring strength.
Ruthie, as she was called, was a woman of many talents. She was a sultry jazz singer and performed in clubs around the Los Angeles area. Ruthie had a passion for fashion and designed hundreds of dresses, coats, pant suits, and more. Ruthie was also a writer and a published poet. Ruthie was also known around town for her amazing pies.
Ruth had a deep and abiding love for her family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and matriarch. Her life was a reflection of quiet strength, compassion, and unwavering care for those she loved. She gave of herself freely—always providing, protecting, and guiding with a gentle and calming presence that will never be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughters, Earleen Ruth Provost, Tonetta Michelle DuBenion; her grandson, Anthony Goodlow Jr., parents, George and Ruth Mathews; her sister, Paula Jean Monteiro; and her brothers George, Kenneth, Norman, William, Noel, Larry, Tony, Oliver, and Maurice Mathews.
Ruth is survived by her children, Emory DuBenion, Cameron (Sofia)DuBenion, Benjamin (Jeannie)DuBenion, Karen (David) Johnson-DuBenion, Allen (Catherine) DuBenion, Roland (Michelle) Stanton, and Zsa Zsa Provost, whom she loved deeply and devoted her life to raising; and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her great joy. She is further survived by her two sisters, Hazel Avington and Zsa Zsa Knight, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish her memory.
Though she is no longer with us in body, Ruth’s spirit lives on—in the memories we cherish, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely. Her legacy will continue through generations to come.
