In Loving Memory of Romulo Jimenez Gomez
April 29, 1948 – September 28, 2025
Romulo Gomez Jimenez was born on April 29, 1948, in Jalostotitlán, Jalisco, Mexico, to Amalia Jimenez Perez and Salvador Gomez Loza. One of twenty-four children in a large and loving family, Romulo grew up helping on the family ranch, where his strong work ethic and sense of responsibility took root early. At just twelve years old, with the encouragement of a family friend, he set out for Mexico City in search of opportunity, working diligently and building the foundation for a life defined by perseverance, generosity, and love.
In 1964, at the age of sixteen, Romulo immigrated to the United States. His first job was at a Japanese nursery in Lomita, California, where he not only cultivated celery but also helped bridge cultures by translating orders between Japanese and Spanish. His kindness, quick wit, and dedication made him beloved among co-workers and friends alike.
In 1970, Romulo met the love of his life, Betty Gomez, at Charro Restaurant, where, fittingly, live mariachi music played in the background. They married in 1972, and Romulo lovingly became a stepfather to Betty’s six children: Toni Castillo, Rodolfo Carmona, Patrick Carmona, Frank Carmona, Ronald Carmona, and John Carmona.
Romulo and Betty were known for their joy and zest for life, especially on the dance floor. Together, they could outspin and outdance anyone, their laughter and rhythm lighting up every celebration. In 1976, they welcomed their only child together, Amalia L. Gomez, named in honor of Romulo’s beloved mother.
Romulo believed deeply in the values of hard work, kindness, and service to others. Over the years, he held positions at Hunter Woodworks, then at Lupe Castillo Sash & Door, and M&A Sash & Door, before venturing out on his own to install custom windows. With an entrepreneurial spirit and sharp business sense, Romulo began purchasing and managing rental properties throughout Los Angeles County and the Central Valley, including Tulare County. His craftsmanship, integrity, and generosity made him a pillar in both his family and his community.
Beyond his skill and business acumen, Romulo was a gifted cook. The aroma of his homemade Spanish rice, chile rellenos, enchiladas rancheras, menudo, chow mein, carnitas, and chicharrones filled the home he shared with Betty in Carson/Long Beach, California, a place that, for decades, was the first stop for friends and family arriving
from Mexico or visiting from afar. Their home was always open, always warm, and always filled with homemade food, laughter, and love.
Romulo is survived by his devoted wife, Betty, his cherished daughter, Amalia L. Gomez, step-children, and his many grandchildren. He was also a treasured father, grandfather, and uncle to many, whether by blood or by bond, and a friend to everyone he met. His generosity, humor, and heart touched countless lives.
On September 28, 2025, Romulo passed away peacefully, surrounded by the chatter of his family and friends, just as he lived - in good company and with love all around. His spirit will forever live on in the food, the stories, and the family he built with so much care
