Richard Chan, 83, went to be with the Lord on February 18, 2026. Born on May 31, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Richard lived a life marked by dedication, perseverance, faith, prayer and deep love for his family.

Richard grew up in Chicago Chinatown with seven siblings. He graduated from Tilden Technical High School in 1959. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1964. He later moved to Houston, TX to pursue his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and excellence.

Richard was introduced to his sweetheart, Rosalie through his good friend, Gregory (Rosalie's cousin). Richard and Rosalie went on to become pen pals in highschool and eventually got married July 9, 1967 in Memphis, TN.

In 1971, Richard relocated to California, where he built a distinguished career at TRW Inc., which later became part of Northrop Grumman. He worked there faithfully until his retirement, earning the respect of colleagues through his intelligence, professionalism, and steady leadership.

Beyond his career, Richard embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. He had a love for ballroom dancing and found joy in traveling, exploring new places and experiences with those he loved. His curiosity and appreciation for the world reflected his vibrant spirit.

Richard was deeply devoted to his faith and church community. He served as a Sunday School teacher at Chinese Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and later faithfully ministered as both an elder and Sunday School teacher at True Light Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles and at South Bay Presbyterian Church in Torrance, California.

Richard and Rosalie were among the core families sent out from True Light Presbyterian Church to plant its daughter congregation, Chinese Presbyterian Church of the South Bay—later known as South Bay Presbyterian Church—which began in their home with Vacation Bible School and Bible studies then later moved to church services at the Torrance YMCA with Sunday School Classes at the Torrance Sizzler restaurant. His leadership, humility, steadfast commitment to serving others, and devotion to prayer were a true testament to his character and faith.

Above all, Richard was a devoted brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his sisters Viola Chan and Marie Chan; his beloved wife, Rosalie Chan; his children, Leslie, Vincent, Adele & Son-in-Law, Mike; his cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Benjamin, and Calliope; and his grand dogs Buddy, Olive & Opal. His family was his greatest blessing and the center of his life.

Richard will be remembered for his integrity, quiet strength, faithful service, enduring love, happiness...and dance moves 😉. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering donating to his church, South Bay Presbyterian Church–Richard Chan Memorial Fund, 2701 Plaza Del Amo, Suite 703, Torrance CA for the sake of sharing the Gospel.
