Retha M. Berglund

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Retha M. Berglund, a longtime resident of San Pedro, passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family on July 20, 2016. Retha was born in Spokane, Washington, on August 28, 1924. As a child, her family moved to Lomita, and Retha graduated from Narbonne High School in the Summer of 1943. She was proud to be a member of "The Great Generation" and her role as a "Rosie the Riveter" during the World War Two era. Always a hard worker, she was also very proud of her 24-year career at Harbor General Hospital as a clerk in the neonatal intensive care unit where she worked until age 80! Retha was a loving and dedicated mother to her children Terry Berglund (Kay), Chris Berglund (Nandi) and Nancy Racowschi (William). She was a loving and doting grandmother and was excited when she learned she was to become a great-grandmother. "Nana" was very proud of her grandchildren Sophia and John Berglund, Kim Berglund, and Matt and Lindsey Racowschi. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Our Mom was a kind and talented woman, and an amazing grandmother. She will be dearly missed by all. The entire family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dolor Vargas, Retha's long-time caregiver and friend, for her loving care and dedication to our mother and grandmother. Visitation will be held 3pm - 8pm on Wednesday, July 27th in the Villetta Suite of Green Hills Mortuary and a funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, July 28th at the Historic Church of Green Hills Memorial Park.
