Ramon Torres (Valdez), age 89, born on April 15, 1937, in Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico, was called Home on May 5, 2026. He passed away peacefully at home in Lomita, CA, where he lived for the past 5 years with his daughter, Theresa, and her husband, Tom.
He was a laborer and in his earlier years worked as a brick layer. He also worked at Atlantic Richfield (ARCO). He then started his own business in or around 1970, Torres Cleaning and Hauling, doing construction clean up. His business was successful and he employed several men. He contracted with several contractors who were building new housing in Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates and Rolling Hills. He then went to work for Gaudenti & Sons Landscaping, where he was a foreman and ran a crew. His last and favorite employment was for Pastor Bob at The Harbor Church in Lomita, where he worked as the maintenance man and groundskeeper from 1998 to 2011, when he retired. He said working at the Harbor was not a job because he loved going there every day. He said Pastor Bob was like a brother to him and treated him so. He loved the staff and the children from preschool to middle school. He said they made him feel special and loved. The children would write him cards when he was sick and for his birthday. The staff always made his birthdays special with his favorite dessert, banana cream pie and Ms. Almerina would make him his favorite chicken noodle casserole. Those were happy and fulfilling years for him.
He was proud of and loved working in his yard where he kept the grass in pristine condition. He planted fruit trees and had thriving lemon trees, as well as a beautiful rose garden that he planted for Joyce, his first wife and the mother of his first three children. He was so proud of his yard and the home he purchased for his family. Other than gardening and yard work, he loved working the fields at Carson Little League and in his later years Carson-Wilmington Little League, where all three of his sons played T-ball and baseball during their teenage years. He was a coach and team dad. This brought him immense pleasure and joy.
Ramon is survived by his daughter, Theresa McHenry (Thomas), his sons, Raymond Torres (Linda), Alfredo Torres (Samantha), Rene Osuna (Rosie), his brother, Joe Torres, his sister Gloria Salce and his grandchildren, Komeiko, Jonathan, Jarrad, Kevin, Joey, Sara, Michael, Gabriel, Ralphie, Emiliano, Elena, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Mauro Torres, his mother Francisca Valdez, son, David Torres, grandson, Adam Cox, sisters Maria de Jesus Torres Valdez and Julia (Judy) Ramirez.
