Raju Khubchand Chhabria, beloved husband, father, and community pillar, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, at the age of 68 in Palos Verdes Estates, California.Born in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Raju was the youngest of seven children born to Khubchand and Sushila Chhabria. A proud member of the Sindhi diaspora, Raju was raised in a warm, close-knit family grounded in Hindu values, surrounded by good-natured friends and a strong emphasis on education. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce from St. Joseph’s University and his Bachelor of Laws from Bangalore University—all while working at his uncle’s textile business, JP Agencies, in the bustling Chickpet district from the age of 19 to 28.

It was during those years that he met Philomina, a nursing student at St. Martha’s College of Nursing. Despite differences in faith and the challenges of a long-distance relationship—Philomina immigrated to the U.S. in 1980—the two remained committed to one another. In a courageous and unconventional decision for the time, they married and started a new life together in California, driven by nothing more than their education, determination, and a shared dream.

While Philomina found stability as a registered nurse at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, Raju searched for his path. After several bold but unsuccessful business ventures, he responded to a newspaper ad promising “unlimited income” through real estate. That moment proved pivotal. He joined the Century 21 office of Bob Maher and, under Maher’s mentorship, quickly distinguished himself with tireless work ethic, discipline, and sales acumen rooted in his background in commerce and textiles.

What followed was a remarkable 19-year run as one of the most successful and admired realtors in the South Bay, earning a reputation as a legend in the Palos Verdes and Beach Cities markets. During this time, he and Philomina raised two sons, Neil (b. 1986) and Anand (b. 1989), and moved from Hawthorne to the Redondo Beach Esplanade before settling in Palos Verdes Estates in 1989, where they built their forever home.

Raju’s career evolved from residential sales to real estate investment and development, where he helped shape the local landscape with luxury homes and commercial properties in some of the South Bay’s most coveted locations. He was a mentor and sponsor to many, offering opportunity and guidance to those around him. He and Philomina were deeply generous, regularly supporting local schools, hospitals, places of worship, and anyone in need.

Raju embraced life beyond work with equal vigor. He learned to play tennis and ski, loved traveling the world with his family, and was a gracious host known for bringing people together. He embodied the philosophy of “work hard, play hard,” living life with a rare blend of discipline and joy.

Raju Chhabria’s story is one of perseverance, vision, and heart. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of achievement, generosity, and love—and an enduring example of what’s possible through grit, courage, and unwavering belief in one’s dreams.
