Paul H. Prestridge, affectionately known as "Papa," departed this world on December 29, 2025, in Long Beach, California, leaving behind a legacy rich with love, service, and cherished memories. Born on October 13, 1927, in St. Helena, California, Paul's journey through life was defined by resilience and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
From a young age, Paul faced significant challenges, losing his father during the Great Depression when he was just six years old. With his mother unable to support him, he forged a new path as a foster child, finding a loving home with the Bogeman family in El Centro, California. It was here that he learned invaluable lessons in discipline, hard work, and the importance of resourcefulness—attributes that would shape his character for the rest of his life. He often recalled being taught to never waste anything and to savor every bite on his plate, a mindset that became ingrained in his very being.
At the tender age of seventeen, Paul proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, embarking on a 30-year military career that would take him across the globe. His service spanned World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, where he was awarded multiple medals for bravery and dedication, ultimately achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He witnessed both the beauty and brutality of humanity; the harrowing experiences during the "Frozen Chosin" campaign of the Korean War left indelible marks on his heart. Yet, through it all, Paul retained a warmth and generosity that made him a beloved figure in the lives of all who knew him.
Following his distinguished military career, Paul ventured into the world of aviation. His remarkable journey included two decades with Lockheed Corporation, where he was integral to the Research and Development of groundbreaking military aircraft. Whether he was helping build L1011 Airliners or working on top secret military programs, Paul’s analytical mind and meticulous nature shone through.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Paul's pride and joy lay in his family. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by them, always capturing moments with his trusty Sharpie to record dates and notes—little mementos of a life deeply lived. His home was a sanctuary of warmth; his natural sense of humor and welcoming spirit drew friends and family alike. Paul had a unique ability to make everyone laugh and think, often sharing witty sayings and wise insights that would linger long after they were spoken. One of his treasured maxims, the Serenity Prayer, resonated deeply with him: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
An avid aviator, Paul earned his pilot's license at Santa Ana Airport, where he spent countless hours pursuing his passion for flying. He built and flew remote-controlled models and delighted in sailplane adventures, igniting the same passion for exploration in those around him. He fostered an environment where every hobby was celebrated, and every passion encouraged, embodying the essence of what it means to be a loving father and grandfather.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Adoracion "Dorie," and their beloved children: Donna, Michael, and their spouses Mario and Carrie. Paul's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Nanette (Jim), Shelly (Brandon), Kelly (Tim), Sonia (Peter), Cristian, Julien, JonJon, Jaden, and Ashlan, as well as his great-grandchildren, Diego, Vivian, Joaquin, Lucas, Julien, Ellie, Lucien, and Zoe, each of whom carries a piece of his heart.
Paul H. Prestridge’s life was a testament to courage, sacrifice, and love. As we gather to honor him, we remember a man who devoted himself completely to his family, to God, his beloved Marine Corps, and to his country, whose indomitable spirit, laughter and deep love will forever echo in our hearts.
