Oscar Kenneth Rhynerson peacefully passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 95 years. Oscar was born on April 29, 1930, in La Cygne, Kansas, and was raised by his mother, Nannie May Driskell Rhynerson Cox, and stepfather, Alonzo Cox. Oscar—known as Kenny to his siblings—was one of eleven Rhynerson children, with five brothers: Lawrence, Ralph, James, Frank, and Charles (Ed) Rhynerson; and five sisters: Martha Rhynerson, Ruth Bullock, Pearl Scott, Alice Rose, and Wilma Stainbrook.
At the age of 17, Oscar enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Lithographer Specialist Petty Officer First Class for 20 years. During deployment in Japan, Oscar met and married Kyoko Sasaki, and together they had two sons, John and Ronald Rhynerson. Oscar returned with his family to the U.S. in 1960 to the Bay Area of California, eventually establishing roots in Long Beach in 1964. After retiring from active service, he held the government service position of Director of U.S. Navy Printing and Publications until his retirement in 1985.In 1978, Oscar met Connie Niles Brandenberg while square dancing. Oscar and Connie were married in May 1981. After retirement, they spent their days together traveling by car around the country and always spending time with family and friends.Oscar was a beloved husband, father, friend, cousin, uncle, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his sister, Wilma Stainbrook; his son John and his wife, Kathleen; his son Ronald and his wife, Janelle; his son Larry and his wife, Sarah; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kyoko, his wife Connie, and nine of his ten siblings.Oscar lived a life marked by quiet success, deep kindness, and unwavering humility. His generosity of spirit and simplicity touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
