Milagros “Mila” Cayetano Lardizabal was born on November 27, 1943, in Manila, the Philippines. The sixth child of Rosario “Charito” Luna Cayetano Lardizabal and Jose “Cito” Ocampo Lardizabal, they named her Milagros ("miracles") because she arrived on the Feast of the Miraculous Medal.
She was the tallest (5'7''), funniest, and loudest daughter (in a good way!) in a large family that included siblings Linda, Esperanza, Nilda, Clemencia, Norma, Jose Jr., Agnes, and Rosario. From childhood, Mila was known for her playful and sociable nature, always quick to say "hello" and befriend strangers. While her love for the Philippines ran deep, she immigrated to the United States in 1983 to join her mama and sisters Esperanza, Agnes, and Rosario, settling in Harbor City, California.
In her later years, Mila was energized by the casino atmosphere; her favorite slot machine was China Shores. When she wasn't at the casino, she enjoyed playing pocket poker games at home and watching The Filipino Channel all day. A loving tita and lola, Mila doted on her many nieces and nephews, including the grand- and great-grand ones, showering them with hugs, kisses, and compliments when they visited the always-busy home she shared with her youngest sister, Rosario ("Charo"), who lovingly cared for Mila until her passing on October 24, 2025.
Her nieces and nephews remember their beloved “Tita Mila” as always talking in her sleep, wearing slippers and a smile, and having a wild hairdo and a fondness for sweets. Vicks VapoRub was her cure-all, and her laughter brought joy to everyone she met.
Mila is survived by her sisters Rosario Lardizabal, Nilda Ocampo, Clemencia Perez, and Agnes and her husband, Florentino Apeles, as well as numerous extended relatives and friends. Her final resting place will be her hometown of Manila, where she will be interred with her papa and brother. Mila will be sorely missed.
