Michael Steven McLachlan was born on February 18, 1964, to Ray and Linda McLachlan and was proud to call San Pedro home his entire life.

Mike attended Leland Street School, Dana Junior High, San Pedro High School, and Los Angeles Harbor College before earning his Bachelor of Science degree, with an emphasis in Finance, from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Some of Mike’s fondest childhood memories were of fishing with Grandpa George on his boat at Castaic Lake and camping with his cousins along the river. His Grandma Midge was a special part of his life. They loved playing cards together, and Mike was always happy to spend time with her dogs. He enjoyed playing golf with his dad through the San Pedro Elks Golf Club and, even during his final days, keeping up with the latest hockey games with his mom.

In 1984, Mike met the love of his life and best friend, Mary Bobich, through mutual friends at the Mary Star Fiesta. They shared a love of Friday night movies, dancing to ’80s rock, bowling, miniature golf, and visits to the Comedy & Magic Club. In December 1990, with the church beautifully decorated for Christmas, Mike and Mary were married at Mary Star of the Sea Church. They celebrated afterward with a dinner at one of Mike’s favorite places, Los Verdes Country Club, where he had spent many days working on his golf game—and where he proudly made a hole-in-one.

The real highlight of Mike’s life was being Bryan’s dad. They were best friends, devoted hockey fans, and steadfast golf buddies. Mike beamed with pride whenever he talked about Bryan. He would perk up whenever Bryan called, even on his sickest days. During those conversations, his pain and struggles seemed to melt away.

Mike began his working life with the News-Pilot as a paper boy, then onto Orange Julius and Marineland. He went on to dedicate more than 30 years to the development of display technologies, working with several companies, from Seiko in the late ‘80’s to Japan Display Inc. (JDI) until retirement this year.

Mike had a generous heart and loved helping others. He would often drop everything to lend a hand to family and friends. His many volunteer efforts included serving as a greeter at Holy Trinity Church alongside Mary, where he happily helped with their donut ministry. In earlier years, he volunteered with the Mary Star Youth Ministry and its high school golf team. Later, he became involved with Bogdanovich Park Little League as a member of its board and coaching staff, as well as San Pedro Relay for Life, San Pedro Youth Coalition, L.A. Junior Kings, and Junior Ducks.

Mike loved being active. He played basketball and baseball in high school and hockey in his 20s. He enjoyed fix-it projects, yard work, detailing cars, and cooking. An accomplished golfer, he especially loved his annual golf trips with the boys. He walked five miles a day and worked out at the gym until the day he became sick.

Mike loved ’80s classic rock and was known to play air drums along with his favorite bands, including Cheap Trick, Queen, Mötley Crüe, Genesis, Van Halen, Bryan Adams, and Bruce Springsteen.

Mike also made it his mission to take his family on at least one big vacation each year, with cruises being his favorite. Proud of having taken more than 20 cruises, he loved sharing stories about his travels to the Mediterranean; the Hawaiian, Caribbean, and Tahitian islands; Alaska; and Mexico. He logged thousands of miles following Bryan’s hockey career and also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and Palm Desert, as well as visits with family.

With inexhaustible courage and determination, Mike battled renal cell carcinoma for three years. On July 26, 2026, with his family by his side and his favorite classic rock playing softly, Mike died peacefully.

Mike is survived by his wife of more than 35 years, Mary; their son, Bryan; his mother, Linda; his sister, Sharon; and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond, and his grandparents, Midge and George.

We miss Mike more than words can say. His big smile, quick wit, outgoing personality, and genuine happiness in getting involved and helping others will stay with us always.

We will celebrate Mike’s life with a funeral at a later date.
