Michael Hersch passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on February 21, 2025, at home in Redondo Beach, California, surrounded by his wife Evelyn and daughter Judy. He had quite an exciting life, born to parents from Vienna, Austria, and spending the first part of his life in England and Scotland and moving to California during high school where he met friends that he kept for a lifetime.
When his parents moved to Minnesota, he decided to attend the University of Minnesota to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering which he put to good use his entire career. The day he graduated from university, he escaped the cold and headed back to Los Angeles where he worked as an engineer for many years until he retired. Michael could fix just about anything and could often be found working on small improvement projects for the house or his car. He had a brilliant mind and wonderful, keen sense of (dry) humor that echoed his upbringing in Britain.
When he wasn’t working or fixing something, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, swimming in the ocean or his pool, attending car shows, riding his bike along the ocean with his local bicycle group, playing classical and pop music on the piano with great finesse, and eating an unusual, but fun diet of all things unhealthy, but tasty! Chocolate, roasted peanuts, black licorice, and McDonald's french fries to name a few!
He loved traveling to visit family in England, Vienna, Australia, and Israel and was an avid and talented photographer, capturing both exciting, memorable moments from his travels as well as simple, candid moments in everyday life.
Michael was active, full of life, and known as someone who would help anyone in need, especially those he felt were being treated unjustly or unfairly. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, 3 daughters Judy, Jacqueline, and Janice, and many other dear family and friends in the U.S. and abroad that will carry his memory with them always.
