Mate began a journey that would take him across continents in pursuit of opportunity and a better life for his family.

Mate Mardesich, a longtime resident of San Pedro, California, passed away on July 2, 2026, at the age of 80.

Mate was known by family and friends as a hardworking, generous, and kind-hearted man whose warmth and friendship touched many lives. He had a special love for canaries and could often be found sitting beside his birdcage, contentedly watching and caring for them for hours.

Born on May 20, 1946, in Komiža, Croatia, Mate began a journey that would take him across continents in pursuit of opportunity and a better life for his family. In 1966, he moved to Clermont-Ferrand, France, where he lived for five years. During that time, he married the love of his life, Vinka, and welcomed their first child, Jakov.

In 1970, Mate and his family immigrated to the United States to build a new future. They settled in San Pedro, where they would make their home for the next 59 years. There, they welcomed their second child, Ani, and Mate devoted himself to providing for his family and building a life grounded in hard work, dedication, and love.

Mate is survived by his beloved wife, Vinka; his son, Jakov; his daughter, Ani; his daughter-in-law, JoAnn; his son-in-law, Shully; and his six grandchildren: Matthew, Nicole, Joseph, Joseph, Michael, and Daniel. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A viewing will be held on July 16, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Green Hills Chapel. Funeral services will take place on July 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Green Hills Memorial Park.
