Mary Margaret Hardy, 86, our beloved matriarch, devoted wife, mom, Nana and remarkable professional, passed peacefully in Redondo Beach on December 26, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Born on May 18, 1939, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, Mary was a beacon of love and kindness throughout her life.

Mary is survived by her children Jack (Valerie) Hardy, Joan (David) Hardy-Bodkin, her 5 granddaughters, Elizabeth, Erica and Erin Hardy, Emily and Elena Bodkin, and her great-grandson Wesley Hardy, who will forever carry her love and lessons in their hearts. She also leaves behind her younger brother, Joseph (Lois) McDermott. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Donald Hardy with whom she is now forever reunited. Mary was also predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ursula McDermott and her sisters Ursula Botiller and Joan Serrato.

Mary attended St John's Elementary School and St. Mary's Academy High School in Inglewood, CA graduating in 1957. Her desire for education continued as she attended El Camino Jr. College and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from California State University, Long Beach, marking a significant milestone that led her into a fulfilling career.

In July of 1958, while attending a summer course at the University of Hawaii, Mary met the love of her life, Don, on the beach in Waikiki. Their whirlwind romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership when they wed on January 17, 1959. Together, they lived comfortably in the beautiful South Bay area, creating countless memories as they enjoyed their stunning ocean view from their home in Rolling Hills Estates. Mary and Don were world travelers, visiting over 44 countries and exploring breathtaking locales, including Palau, Yap, Africa, Fiji, China, Scotland, and Antarctica. Their love story, rich in adventures and experiences, spanned many decades until they were reunited in Heaven.

Her talents extended beyond travel; she was known for her beautiful knitting and sewing projects and was an avid gardener showcasing her stunning cymbidiums on her front walkway. She enjoyed playing golf and tennis; forging beautiful lifetime friendships along the way.

In the early years, while raising their two children Jack and Joan, Mary worked part-time at Newberrys, in the Crenshaw shopping district and as a teller at Great Western Savings Bank in Torrance. In 1972 she became an employee of the IRS, where she dedicated 28 years of her life, beginning as Review Staff and advancing to the role of Team Coordinator for Large Case Programs. Notably, in 1980, Mary was accepted into the International Program, making her the first female International Auditor in LA County. Her commitment and technical expertise culminated in a well-deserved retirement in 1999 as a valued member of the Appeals Division.

Mary's passion for life extended beyond her career; she was the heart and soul of her family. Known as the glue that held everyone together, she cherished every opportunity to celebrate birthdays, achievements, and even just gatherings 'for no reason at all.' Holidays like Christmas and Easter were filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of loved ones thanks to her thoughtful organization and loving spirit. Mary took care of everyone, bringing meals to sick friends, assisting the elderly with tax preparations, teaching Sunday School, and being a constant presence in her community. Her life truly embodied the spirit of service and generosity.

Perhaps her greatest joy came from her family; she adored her five granddaughters—Elizabeth, Erica, Erin, Emily, and Elena—and her great-grandson, Wesley. Each of them hold a treasure trove of memories created by their grandmother, who effortlessly wove love and laughter into every moment spent together.

A private memorial service to celebrate her extraordinary life will be held on February 21, 2026. Her family looks forward to sharing memories and honoring the legacy of a remarkable woman whose love touched all who knew her. Mary Margaret Hardy will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for the kindness and joy she brought into this world.
