Mary Angeline Bobic

Mary Angeline Bobic was born May 17, 1924 in East Chicago Indiana. She was the middle child born to Jacob and Simica Rokov. Her husband Ed, sister Elizabeth, and brother Marion preceded her in death. She passed away peacefully at home at the age of 97.
Mary grew up as a young girl in San Pedro and graduated from Dana Middle School and San Pedro High School. On September 29, 1947 she married Edward Bobic at the old Mary Star of the Sea church on 9th St. She gave birth to 2 children, John and Sandra, and was a devoted and nurturing mother.
Mary was also outgoing. She loved to cook and entertain together with her beloved husband Ed of 69 years. Over the years they went to many socials and traveled a lot as part of several senior groups with many great friends. Mary and Ed were very good dancers and the envy of a lot of friends.
Mary loved her family and extended family. She enjoyed being with them all. She was known for being overly affectionate, sweet and caring, encouraging and supportive. Whether you met her for the first time or were a long time friend she greeted you with a hug and a kiss.
Mary had a sweet tooth for all baked goods but was partial to anything chocolate: See’s Candies (especially truffles), 5th Avenue bars, etc. She was a good baker and specialized in 4 Croatian favorites: biscotti, apple strudel, nut roll, and poppy seed roll. In her later years she would rely on the multitude of birthday parties in the family to get her fix, or nephew Robert to bring her baked goods, or son-in -law Duane to bake pecan chocolate chip cookies, or son John to get something from Polly Ann’s (bear claw) or Granny’s Doughnuts (apple fritter).
During the course of her adult life she worked at several jobs from stenographer, to store deli, La Chispa Restaurant in Pedro, and Schick Lingerie with a group of ladies she was very close to. Mary loved people. She was a people person: always smiling, caring, and serving. God was very good to Mary giving her a long life with relatively few health issues. She was blessed to be part of the “Great Generation” of proud Americans who valued God, country, family, community, and hard work. She lived it out in San Pedro surrounded by numerous friends, relatives, and her church: She was involved with the Velike Gospe Society of Mary Star of the Sea Parish.
Mary is survived by son John (Ruth) Bobic, daughter Sandra (Duane) Calkins, grandchildren Joanna (Andre) Esperias, Joshua Bobic, Jeremy (Carlene) Calkins, Nathan Calkins, Daniel (Kimmie) Calkins, great-grandchildren Micah, Katie, Sadie, Ashley, Kaylie, Dane, Dannie, Nathan, Jacob, Landon, Logan and numerous nephews and nieces.
