Marie Lum
May 5, 1949 - March 3, 2022
Marie was born in Hong Kong, the third child and eldest daughter to Matthew and Bernardine. Five years separated the siblings, the late Joseph, Francis, and Ann, the youngest. After an early education there, all four went onto boarding schools in England. After university, she began to work for her parents, first in Hong Kong, and then from London where she renovated a house which became a much-loved base for family and friends.
The friendships made during the British period of her life were important and long-lasting. Food, and her garden were her passion, as well as an active cultural life. Many will remember fondly the wonderful dinners she cooked. She travelled widely with her parents and friends. After the parents relocated to Palos Verdes, frequent visits there became permanent when they became older and infirm. She became their aide, managed their business and household, and was their chauffeur and carer. After their deaths, she decided to stay on. She chose a burial plot to be near them.
Family was important to her. She delighted in her surviving nephews and nieces (Stephen, Rosaline, Lawrence, Christopher, and Felicity), and their growing families. She also made a great effort to stay in touch with the wider family and friends, spread throughout the world. Although she lived on her own but was never alone; her brother-in-law Rodney, spoke to her almost daily, and the nephews and nieces kept a watchful eye on her.
She had a big heart and a generous spirit, and will be remembered with love and fondness.
If desired, flowers for the funeral, or a donation to a charity of your choice in her name.
