Joyce carried a warmth, creativity, and quick‑witted, fun humor that shaped every chapter of her life.
Joyce P. Fredericks, 80, of Harbor City, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on October 29, 1945, in San Jose, California, Joyce was the daughter of Harold and Maxine Warner and the youngest sister of Jean and Marie — all of whom preceded her in death. From her earliest years, Joyce carried a warmth, creativity, and quick‑witted, fun humor that shaped every chapter of her life.
As a young woman, Joyce was known for her beauty, her bright spirit, and her love of the beach. She spent countless days by the water, enjoying the sun, the ocean, and the early surf‑band music that defined Southern California’s golden era. It was in this world of guitars, salt air, and youthful energy that she met the love of her life, Lonny Fredericks, a talented guitarist who played with The Journeymen and performed alongside Dick Dale and the Del‑Tones. Their connection was instant, and together they built a partnership rooted in devotion, laughter, and shared adventure.
Joyce’s early working years were as vibrant and varied as she was. She spent time as a Shasta Rep Girl, introducing shoppers to new soda flavors with her trademark charm and friendliness. She later worked briefly at TRW, and went on to study court reporting, completing numerous depositions and assisting judges as they reached decisions on important cases. Though she excelled in each role, Joyce ultimately found her greatest joy in the work she did at home and in her garden, where her creativity and nurturing spirit flourished most naturally.
Together they built a partnership rooted in devotion, laughter, and shared adventure.
Known for her remarkable artistry, Joyce expressed herself most vividly through her paintings and mural work. Her talent brought color and beauty to the spaces around her, and her creative spirit inspired those fortunate enough to see her work. She also had a profound love for animals — especially cats and birds — and cared for them with tenderness and devotion.
Joyce’s green thumb was legendary. Her gardens flourished under her care, becoming peaceful sanctuaries that reflected her patience, attentiveness, and love for nurturing life.
Her commitment to community was equally strong. Joyce served on the local neighborhood council and played an active role in improving local parks, including Machado Park and Machado Lake. She was also involved in the well‑known rescue of Reggie the alligator, helping advocate for his safe removal from Machado Lake and supporting efforts to secure his lasting home at the Los Angeles Zoo — a story that became a beloved part of local history and a testament to her compassion for animals and her community.
Joyce is survived by her daughter Suzette Yunek and son‑in‑law Brent Yunek; her cherished grandchildren Carlton and Lucy Yunek, who brought her immense joy; her brother‑in‑law Dan Stage (husband of her late sister Jean); and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever carry her memory forward.
Her gardens flourished under her care, becoming peaceful sanctuaries that reflected her patience, attentiveness, and love for nurturing life.
Her legacy lives on in the art she created, the gardens she tended, the animals she cared for, the parks she helped improve, and the kindness and humor she shared so freely.
The family invites all who were touched by Joyce’s life to join in honoring a woman whose presence made the world gentler, brighter, and more deeply connected.
