José Hernández was born January 2, 1939 in Colón, Republic of Panamá. He was the first child born to Modesta McNamee and José Hernández. José, affectionately nicknamed "Nando" by family and friends, as a child he was an athlete who played multiple sports including soccer, basketball, and baseball. José was an extrovert who enjoyed life to the fullest. To know "Nando" was to love him. He had a wonderful sense of humor that often tested the patience and self-control of family and friends. Above all, he was a wonderful son, a caring and supportive brother, a loving and responsible father. A true friend to those who were fortunate to call him "friend"
He passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness. He leaves behind his wife Vilma, his children Ursula Hernández, José Hernández, and Dalitza Hernández. He is also survived by his grandchildren Xavier, Jonathan, Julian and Isiah, and siblings Claudina (Jerome) Moreno, George (Rosella), Mirta Castañeda, Gloria Ogando, Maritza Hayes and Nilka (Santiago) Brown. He is preceded in death by his sister Ana Arángo.
