It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Robert “Butch” Mihovil. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Mihovil, his mother, Winnie Mihovil, his brother, Donald Mihovil, and Madeline Thomas, his companion of many years. He treated Madeline’s children, Stephen, Michael and Jenna like his own. When John was born, on September 12th, 1941, in San Francisco, his parents didn’t have a name picked out for him. His Aunt suggested that he looked like a Butch, and that name stuck for 83 years. It was very early in his life that his parents moved to San Pedro, the home to many other Croatian families. Butch went to Dana Middle School and later graduated from San Pedro High School. It was during these school years that he met many of his lifelong friends. Butch was a proud member of the the Sires, a local club founded in San Pedro with some of his closest friends from town. He went on to join the military and was a proud Army Reservist, serving until he was honorably discharged. Butch built a career at Todd’s Naval Shipyard, where he worked as a shipfitter for many years, only retiring when they closed down in 1989. Butch was a caring son to his mother and father, a loving brother, a fantastic uncle, and a loyal friend. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be at Green Hills on Monday, March 10th from 4:30 to 8:30, with Rosary at 6:30. The funeral will be the following day, Tuesday, March 11, at 10:30 am at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Parish."
