John Kowan, 68, of Torrance, California, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and sons. 

Born on October 13, 1958, in Inglewood, California, at Daniel Freeman Hospital, John was the beloved son of Al and Daisy Kowan. He grew up in Torrance and attended St. James School, followed by West Torrance High School. 

It was during high school in 1975 that John met his beautiful wife, Debbie. Their first date was when John asked Debbie to homecoming. From that moment on, the high school sweethearts were inseparable and began a lifelong journey together filled with love, laughter, family, and countless memories. John and Debbie welcomed their two sons, Brian in 1980 and Bobby in 1986.

In 1984, John and Debbie opened their successful family business, John Kowan Termite Control. With determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his customers, John built the business into a respected and trusted South Bay company. After 42 years in business, John was able to retire. His clients and the management companies he worked with admired him for his exceptional work ethic, punctuality, and dependability. John Kowan Termite Control will always be remembered as a staple of the South Bay community. 

In addition to his successful business, John dedicated 20 years to coaching baseball at West Torrance High School. His life lessons, encouragement, and uplifting coaching style touched the lives of countless players over the years. To many, John was not simply a coach, but a mentor who made a lasting impact on the young men he coached. 

John was known for his outgoing personality, positive outlook on life, contagious smile, and unforgettable laugh. He found joy in many things throughout his life, including Motocross, coaching his sons in baseball, attending Angels games, playing golf, waterskiing, and boating at Lake Mead. Above all, John treasured spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren, Molly, Nolan, and Rylee May. 

Family was at the heart of John's life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Debbie; his oldest son, Brian, and his wife, Tiffany; his youngest son, Bobby, and his wife, Christina; and his beautiful grandchildren, Molly, Nolan, and Rylee May. 

Those who knew John will remember him for his advice, his jokes, his generosity, and the tremendous love he had for his family. He had a way of making people feel welcome and leaving them with a smile. His love, laughter, wisdom, and presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former clients, baseball players, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

A funeral service and celebration of John's life will be held on September 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Church in Redondo Beach, followed by a reception at the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach. 

The family would like to thank all of John's family and friends for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. John leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love, hard work, friendship, and family that will live on in all who knew him.
