John, born in McKeesport, PA, and jacketed in the 1st grade at Mary Star grammar school with the nickname “Birdy”, went on to feed the pigeons on 9/11/26.

John graduated from Mary Star High in 1958 and continued to support the school through his nephews and great niece/nephews, attending academic and sports events. He has retained friendships with his classmates through these events and meeting for lunch several times a year. John received his BA in English from Long Beach State and, although never published, he wrote many short stories and poems. He was an avid reader and had a memory like a steel trap for all types of stats and information.

John served in the US Army Green Berets in the early 60’s during the Viet Nam war. Upon return, John joined McDonnell Douglas/Boeing retiring with 40+ years of service.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Eva, and his younger brother, Tony. He is survived by his sister, Mary Bertovic Reynolds, his nephews Mark and Lance (Elisha) Reynolds, Edith, and his great nephews/nieces Aidan, Drew, Mathias, Gia, Sophia and Norah. Over the years, John was a fixture at Utro’s, Ante’s, and Pacific Diner, where he went daily for his breakfast and worked his crossword puzzles.

Services for John will be at Green Hills Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 16, 11:30 a.m.. We ask that, as you leave his service, you remember John at your future get togethers that you shared with him.
