Johanna Titus was born in 1934 to Peter and Ann Boonstra in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, a region rich with Frisian heritage. That heritage remained a deep source of pride throughout her life. As a young child, she moved with her family to Southern California, where they became part of a growing Boonstra family community. They settled in Torrance, where her parents owned and operated the U&I Dairy on Spencer Street—a place that became the center of both family life and lifelong friendships.

From an early age, Johanna showed a remarkable sense of dedication. Her school years were marked by perfect attendance and strong academic performance, along with a natural ability to build lasting relationships. During World War II, her family contributed to the war effort from home while also supporting relatives abroad, strengthening Johanna’s sense of responsibility, community, and connection to her roots.

As she grew, Johanna continued to excel. At South Gate Junior High and later at Redondo Union High School, she distinguished herself academically and socially. She participated in organizations such as the California Scholastic Federation, Future Homemakers of America, and various school and athletic groups. She also played an active role in Rainbow Girls, a Masonic youth organization focused on leadership and service, ultimately achieving the honor of Grand Advisor in 1951.

After high school, Johanna pursued training as a Licensed Vocational Nurse while also working as a secretary for an architectural firm—an experience that gave her practical skills she would carry throughout her life. In 1953, she married Harry Titus, a man she had first noticed years earlier when he rode up to her family’s dairy on horseback. Their relationship grew over time, and they married while Harry was serving in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. That same year, they welcomed their daughter, Trina.

In the years that followed, Johanna and Harry built a life rooted in family, hard work, and creativity. They returned to Torrance, where they raised their three children—Trina, Charles Trent, and Tedde Henry. Together, with the help of extended family, they built and improved their homes, beginning with a small apartment over a garage and eventually settling into the home on Anza where their children grew up.

Johanna was a devoted mother who instilled in her children the values of discipline, education, and service to others. She led by example, volunteering in scouting programs, church activities at St. James Catholic Church, and the Little Company of Mary Hospital Auxiliary. At home, she expressed her creativity as a skilled seamstress, sewing clothing for her children and crafting everything from upholstery to home décor with precision and care.

Family life extended beyond the home through travel, learning, and shared experiences. Vacations often took them to family properties in Sequoia National Park and Springville, California, or to museums, historical sites, and California missions. Johanna had a gift for turning everyday experiences into meaningful stories—many of which remain part of her family’s legacy.

Never one to stop learning, Johanna pursued higher education later in life, earning her Bachelor of Science in Human Resources and Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco in 1983. She went on to work with the Torrance Unified School District, where she conducted scholastic and aptitude testing and contributed to multidisciplinary teams. This work brought her both fulfillment and a sense of purpose.

In retirement, Johanna and Harry moved to Vista, California, where they embraced a slower pace of life while remaining deeply engaged with family and community. Together, they transformed their home into a welcoming gathering place for loved ones. Johanna continued her lifelong commitment to learning through community groups and classes, and she remained active in church and social organizations.

A passionate gardener, Johanna approached her outdoor spaces as works of art, creating vibrant garden “rooms” filled with color and life. She also devoted countless hours to researching and documenting the histories of the Boonstra and Titus families, earning her place as the family’s cherished “memory keeper.” Her dedication preserved a rich legacy for generations to come.

After 62 years of marriage, Johanna lost Harry in 2015. She later returned to the South Bay, where she remained close to her children and continued to shape her surroundings with her creativity and determination. Even in her later years, she believed strongly in staying active, maintaining her independence and tending to her home and garden for as long as she was able.

Johanna passed peacefully with her sons at her bedside on April 19, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry, beloved daughter in law Elaine, and grandson Jeffrey.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Trina; her sons, Charles Trent and Tedde Henry; her grandchildren, Michael, Libby, and Cathy; and her great-grandchildren, Serenity, Harrison, Scarlett, Dawson, and Liam. Her legacy lives on in the strength of her family, the stories she preserved, and the many lives she touched with her warmth, creativity, and unwavering dedication.
