Howard Chambers, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, engineer, veteran, and respected leader, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was born on November 11, 1942, in Huntsville, Tennessee, to George and Virginia Chambers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Chambers; his son, Bryan (Maybelle) Chambers; his daughter, Melissa (Richard) Walker; and his cherished granddaughters, Brielle and Cassidy, who brought him immense pride and joy.
Howard Chambers graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1964 with a degree in mechanical engineering, with a focus in aerospace engineering. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force, including service at Eglin Air Force Base and in Vietnam 1967-1968, completing his military service in 1968.
In 1969, he began a distinguished career with Rockwell International, where he contributed to major aerospace programs including the B-1. Over the years, he held numerous senior leadership roles spanning test, logistics, business development, and program management. Following Boeing’s acquisition of Rockwell’s aerospace and defense business in 1996, he continued to lead at the highest levels, serving as Vice President and General Manager of the C-17 Globemaster III Transport Program and later leading Airlift and Tanker Programs. He also served as Vice President of Program Management and Independent Review for Integrated Defense Systems, where he was instrumental in advancing program management excellence across the organization. He finished his professional career while serving on a special assignment as Vice President & Deputy Program Manager, 787 Program in Seattle, WA.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was deeply committed to his community. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Aquarium of the Pacific, Vice Chairman of the California Council for Excellence, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He was also actively involved in education, serving as Boeing’s executive liaison to California State University Long Beach and advising advanced business programs at both CSULB and the University of Tennessee.
He will be remembered for his leadership, dedication to family, and lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
His services will be held at Green Hills on May 14, 2026 at 11:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in his honor.
