A lifelong resident of San Pedro, George attended Seventh Street School, Dana Junior High, San Pedro High School, Compton College and graduated from the University of Southern California.
An accomplished athlete, George was a multiyear varsity athlete in gymnastics and track & field at SPHS. He was All-League and All-City in gymnastics and AAU state champion in the vault in 1945 and 1946. He was also on the gymnastics teams at Compton College and USC. He was an expert swimmer and amateur boxer. Still in high school during World War II, George was a Sea Scout and served as a Civil Defense air raid messenger.
After graduation from USC, George served in U.S. Army Counter-intelligence in Europe from 1952-54. After separating from the service, George managed the Harbor Laundry and Dry Cleaners and later started his own business, which he operated for 54 years.
He was twice elected Master Councilor, San Pedro chapter, Order of DeMolay and he exemplified the seven Cardinal Virtues his entire life.
More than anything else George enjoyed time with his family. George and wife Sheila enjoyed traveling, particularly cruising, at every opportunity. He was a wise counselor who emphasized personal character and encouraged his family to live life to its fullest. He enjoyed chess, and took pride in teaching the game to all his children and grandchildren. A perfect gentleman always, his ready smile, quick wit and sense of humor will be missed.
His parents, Leon and Mary Ferrier and His Son, Drew, preceded George in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Sheila, son Greg (Pamela) and his grandchildren Geoffrey (Anjeanette), Brandon, Derek, Christina, Travis and great-grandchildren Drew and Logan. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth (JoAnn) of San Pedro.
Interment was at Green Hills Memorial Park, funeral services were private. A celebration of George's life is planned for Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
