Gary D Johnson, 90 of Rialto, California passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026. He was born in a small town in Texas on January 26, 1936 to parents Lloyd R Johnson and Juanita Vie Johnson. Not long after, Lloyd Johnson moved his family to Rialto where they raised their two sons Gary & Lee, started the family construction business and would ultimately live out the rest of their lives together.
Gary attended San Bernardino High School and attended college at the University of Arizona earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering. During that time, he entered the ROTC program after which he entered into U.S. Army Reserves and reported to duty at Ft. Benning, Georgia for Infantry Training where he earned the Parachutist Badge.
Gary made his contribution to the world through many engineering projects over his 60-year career. He started working large scale infrastructure projects all over the west including building roads and housing developments in Tehachapi with his brother Lee, building missile silos in Montana, and designing various structures at military bases. He later opened Johnson Engineering in Rialto where he worked on hundreds of projects supporting local businesses and municipalities.
Gary was a very active member of the community, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the board at the Rialto Historical Society, sponsored local youth sports teams, and served as the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 105 for several years helping several scouts achieve the Eagle Scout rank. Gary, himself, for his service to the scouting program, earned the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished unselfish service to youth and the community.
Gary is survived by his brother Lee Johnson, son Adam Johnson & his partner Christina, son Stephen Johnson & his wife Olya, grandchildren Fox, Fia, Maya and Max, and by the mother of his sons, Tanya Johnson. He was preceded in death by parents Lloyd and Juanita, and wife Fay.
A luncheon honoring Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 12:00 at Ramrod Senior Park in San Bernardino, California. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
