Gary Michael Familathe
May 19, 1949 — August 12, 2025
Passed away at the age of 76 on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at the VA Hospital Loma Linda, CA. Gary was born on May 19, 1949 to the late Tony and Virginia Familathe in San Pedro, CA and was the eldest of their 3 children. Gary grew up in San Pedro attending Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School where he was an altar server; graduating from San Pedro High School in 1967.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1968 — 1974 as a USAF Staff Sergeant (Air Traffic Controller/LRR and NORAD Supervisor positions) receiving an honorable discharge in 1974. Following service to his country Gary returned home to San Pedro where he attended Los Angeles Harbor College and California State University Long Beach completing a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Gary had a natural talent for communicating with people and a distinct ability to build an immediate rapport whether it was a formal business associate or the housekeeper assigned to clean the offices. His infectious smile led him on a 40 year career in sales and marketing positions where he was employed at Pac Bell US Telecenter, San Francisco; Coachella Valley Broadcasters, Palm Springs; and Bowman Industries coordinating consumer electronics in 13 US states.
Gary was known to his family as “The Big Ragu” for his love of cooking and as the Italians say he loved to “Mangia”. His life was a journey of service to his country, his Catholic faith, family, love, and leaving a legacy of cherished memories. His family and friends will greatly miss his conversations and the ability to uplift those around him even in the most challenging situations. His laughter resonated with everyone and he will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Gary is survived by his son Gary Jr. Familathe; grandson Victor Familathe; former wife Ofelia (Mendoza) Familathe; sister Eileen Grippando (Daryl); brother Ray Familathe (Cathy); nephews Vince Grippando (Gloria), and Gabriel Familathe (Natalie) as well as numerous close cousins and lifelong friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in honor of Gary to any charity benefiting U.S. Veterans.
