Fred Oliver Bender Jr.

Born in St. Louis Mo. The first of four sons to Fred and Gertrude Bender. Fred moved to San Pedro in about 1948, where he met and married Juanita White. That marriage has lasted three months short of 65 years. Fred was a precision machinist. Through employment was difficult in the year 1950, Fred was fortunate to find a job with U.S. Borax and remained employed by them for 41 years. His reputation for quality work led to the opportunity to do work for Preston Sturges, of the move industry He also had the chance to do work for Howard Hughes and the "Spruce Goose". Two daughters blessed this marriage. Darlene (Len Funk) and Cheryl Lomonaco (Don Davies). Our three grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Rebecca have completed our family. Fred was proud of the quality of his work and was appreciated by his employers. He received recognition as one of the "20 Mule Team" that being the 20 top employees of the Wilmington Plant. Fred was a member of the L.A Harbor Masonic Lodge and the Long Beach Scottish Rite. Brothers, Charles, Bob and Gerald pre-deceased Fred. Seven nephews all in Washington state, David, Donald, Daniel, Bobby, Kenneth and Bill with one nephew in St. Louis, Gary Bender. Sister-in-law is also in Washington state. We give thanks to hospice for the care they gave Fred in his final days and a very special thank-you to our neighbor David Brooker for being there for us when we needed help the most. And of course to Fred's special buddy, Pekingese, Nobu. Visitation will be at Green Hills Memorial Park, Wednesday, March 11, 2015 @ 3:00 - 8:00pm with Services on Thursday, March 12, 2015 @ 1:00pm.
