In Loving Memory Ferdinand Joseph Karg, a devoted father, skilled craftsman, and successful business owner, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 96.
Born on May 20, 1929, in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany, Ferdinand demonstrated resilience and vision from an early age. At just 14, he began his lifelong vocation in the field of prosthetics—a trade introduced to him by his father.
He lived through the hardships of World War II between the ages of 12 and 16. He often shared that he fell in love with America when he was only six years old and dreamt of moving there. At the age of 23, he fulfilled that dream, immigrating to the United States and eventually becoming a naturalized citizen. He was proud of his German heritage and overjoyed to become a part of American history—a dream realized.
Ferdinand was affectionately known as “Fred” by his American friends and family, and “Ferdi” by his German loved ones.
Despite settling in America, Ferdinand remained deeply connected to his family and friends in Germany. They visited him and his children often, and he frequently traveled back as well. A devoted son, he called his mother nearly every day after his father's passing in 1966, continuing until her death decades later. Shortly after Ferdinand made the journey to America, his brother Otto followed and began working with him at Karg Prosthetics Co., where they remained business partners until Ferdinand’s retirement. Several uncles had preceded Ferdinand’s journey to the U.S., providing strong family ties and support upon his arrival.
Ferdinand was a remarkably adventurous soul. He traveled the globe with curiosity and gratitude, visiting exciting destinations such as Alaska, Nepal, the African plains, and the Philippines. An avid hiker throughout most of his life, he continued daily walks well into his later years. He was a natural-born skier, and in his mid-years, he even learned to fly and earned his pilot’s license—flying for pleasure and often with his children.
In addition to his love of adventure, Ferdinand was outgoing and deeply social. People were naturally drawn to him, both in business and in life. He was not only a wonderful employer but also a mentor to many. His employees admired and respected him, often describing him as generous, wise, and kind-hearted.
Ferdinand is survived by his four beloved daughters: Linda Karg, Diana Karg, Norma Karg, and Julia Chidley. He loved them deeply and remained devoted to them throughout his life. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his cherished siblings: Burgi Gerner, Otto Karg, and Erika Schwarzer—siblings bound by a love and loyalty that even death cannot break. He leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he held in high regard and deep affection.
It will be difficult for us to carry on.
Many have gone before him, but many remain who will forever carry the memories of the life he shared with us. He will never be forgotten.
Ferdinand will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, unwavering integrity, and profound devotion to his family—and to the country he proudly called home.
