Evelyn Cabrera Galeon was born Feb 10, 1934 in Paniqui, Tarlac, Philippines. Her father was Gaudencio Cabrera, Sr. and her mother was Jamoria Abraham. She was the eldest of five.
She graduated as Valedictorian from Central Luzon High School in 1950, where she met her husband, Manuel Rombaoa Galeon. She graduated from Mary Johnston School of Nursing in 1954 at the top of her class and worked at the Mary Johnston Hospital in Manila.
In the late 1950’s, she worked abroad as a registered nurse at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and also worked a double job as a private nurse, sending money back home to help her family and her brother and sister go to college.
On October 18, 1959, she married Manuel R. Galeon and had 2 daughters— Gigi in 1960 and Gwen in 1964. In 1965, Manuel and Evelyn relocated to La Carlota in Negros Occidental for Manuel’s new job opportunity as a Chief Engineer in the Sugar Mill. Evelyn stayed home to care for Gigi and Gwen.
On May 1, 1969, the young family immigrated to the US. They shared a small apartment on Alvarado Street with Evelyn’s sister and brother-in-law Azucena and Angel Dacuma.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Evelyn worked at St Vincent’s Hospital. In Sept 1969, they moved to Gardena, where they lived for six years. Evelyn worked as a Supervising Nurse during the 1970’s at Hollypark Hospital in Gardena, and Morningside Hospital in Inglewood.
On Oct 24, 1974, Evelyn and Manuel, Gigi and Gwen became US citizens. On Nov 30, 1975, the family moved to their permanent home in Torrance, in which Evelyn and Manuel lived until they both moved into Clearwater Assisted Living in Feb 2024 due to both having Alzheimer’s.
In the late 1970’s, Evelyn went back to school and attended classes at El Camino College to become an Operating Room (OR) Nurse. She worked at various hospitals such as Centinela Hospital, Torrance Memorial, and Bay Harbor Hospital. where she retired in 1996 at 62.
She and the family became members of the First United Methodist Church of Torrance in Feb 1976, and was an active member over the years, and remained member until her death.
Her proudest moments that brought so much joy was becoming a grandmother and welcoming each grandson – Melchor in 1989—Anthony 1991—Kevin 1992—Christian 1994. And in 2025, she became a great-grandmother and welcomed her first great-grandson Seb.
In 2017, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 83. Evelyn was 92 years old when she passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday Feb 16, 2026 at Sunshine Board and Care in Lomita.
Her favorite hobbies included reading, shopping, collecting dolls and stuffed animals, picking and arranging flowers, crocheting and making crafts which she would give out as gifts, and walking for exercise.
She will always be remembered by her family as a leading example of great faith, love, kindness, and a generous heart.
