Evelyn "Evvie" Fong

August 31, 1939 — January 4, 2025

Beloved mother/grandmother/sister/aunt passes peacefully while on hospice.
With grief and hope, we mourn and commemorate the passing of Evelyn Fong, age 85. We grieve because we will miss her love and smiles. We hope because Evelyn had accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and is now with Him eternally (John 3:16).
Evelyn was born in San Francisco in August 1939. The second of five children, she grew up in the city, attending Jean Parker Elementary School, Francisco Junior High School, and graduating from Galileo High School in 1958. After high school, Evvie took secretarial classes and worked in the automotive industry. In addition, she began attending First Chinese Baptist Church of San Francisco.
In August 1962, Evelyn married Danny Lee. God blessed them with three daughters: Joy, May (formerly Felicia), and Taylor (formerly Leticia). Beginning married life in San Francisco, the couple moved to San Pablo to purchase their first home and eventually to Pleasanton, where they continued to raise their daughters. Evelyn was a fantastic cook, a thorough housekeeper, a hard worker, and a devoted mother who also worked part-time to help provide for the family’s needs. Some of her many specialties: roast chicken, green beans and flank steak, black bean spare ribs, and banana cake.
Newly divorced in 1985, Evelyn, who was in her 40’s and had not worked full-time since giving birth, decided to take the civil service exam to work for the US government. She studied diligently and passed with flying colors, starting a successful 10-year career as a clerk stenographer for the US Army Corps of Engineers, replete with commendations for a job well done. In the mid-90’s, Evvie ended her career to take care of her ailing father full-time. She loved caring for him, living with him until his death in 1997. Since then, she enjoyed spending time with her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren and was thankful to be able to live in the same Union Street flat where she grew up. Evelyn loved the simple things in life, doing them intentionally and thoroughly: cooking, creating new recipes, going grocery shopping, reading, drawing, caring for animals, and sharing goodness and kindness with others. She also enjoyed mystery movies on the Hallmark Channel.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters Joy Lawrence, May Johnson, and Taylor Jenkins; her two sons-in-law Rob Lawrence and Darryl Johnson; her three grandchildren Timothy Lawrence, Joshua Lawrence, and Malia Jenkins; her younger brothers Lincoln Fong and Franklin Fong. She is predeceased by her parents Teung and Elma Fong, her older sister Bernice Wu, and her younger sister Hazel Gong.
