With heavy hearts, the family of Diane (Hindman) Bertelsen announces her passing on July 21, 2026 at the age of 79. She was a lifelong Angeleno who graduated from Visitation Elementary and St. Bernard High School. Diane continued her education and earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education at UCLA. She began her career as a public school teacher and reading specialist, later becoming a corporate educator at Hughes Industries until her retirement. In 1984, Diane married John Bertelsen of San Pedro and they shared over 37 happy years together. Upon retirement, she became an active volunteer of the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society. Diane dedicated her life to organizing community events, training volunteers, and mentoring the youth of her community. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her parents, Wayne and Mary Hindman, and is survived by her 5 siblings Vicki, Tim, Pat, Patti, and Jim, as well as 5 nieces, 3 nephews, 3 grandnieces, 3 grandnephews and her cat, Wilma. Diane was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who remembered and celebrated every birthday and holiday with special care. Her thoughtfulness spread joy to all who knew her. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by family, friends, and neighbors. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro on August 10th, at 10:30am with internment to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Point Fermin Lighthouse Society to support the Diane Bertelsen San Pedro HS Cadet Excellence Stipend (pflhs.org).
