Listen to Obituary

Dawn Ryoko Terada, devoted sister, cherished godmother, dear friend, and longtime public servant, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in Park City, Utah, in the years following the end of World War II, Dawn and her family later moved to California, first living in Long Beach before settling in Harbor City. It was there that she grew up and formed many of the friendships that would remain part of her life for decades.

She attended Harbor City Elementary School, Fleming Junior High School, and Narbonne High School. Many of her school classmates became lifelong friends, a testament to her ability to build lasting relationships and remain connected to the people who mattered to her. Following high school, Dawn began her working life with the County of Los Angeles administration offices. Her career soon took her to the newly incorporated City of Lomita, where she became the city’s second employee, hired in July 1964, just two weeks after Lomita incorporated on June 30, 1964. She began her career with the city as a secretary and was promoted to deputy city clerk in 1969. Before long, she became Lomita’s City Clerk, a position she held for many years with dedication and distinction.

In March 2010, she took on the additional title of City Manager, continuing her service to the community until her retirement in May 2012. Her 47 years of service to Lomita reflected her commitment, knowledge, reliability, and genuine care for the city and the people she served.

Outside of work, Dawn enjoyed a full and adventurous life. In her younger years, she loved hiking, golfing, reading, and traveling. Retirement opened the door to even more adventures with family and friends. She traveled the world, visiting more than 40 countries and experiencing destinations throughout Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean, Mexico, Canada, and beyond. She also enjoyed exploring the many beautiful and diverse destinations throughout the United States, creating cherished memories wherever her travels took her. There was also a playful side to Dawn, and she never lost her enthusiasm for the things she loved. A devoted Dodgers fan, she was especially fond of Shohei Ohtani and enjoyed the excitement of playing the slots in Las Vegas and at Pala. She also loved spending time on her iPhone, where she found plenty of ways to keep herself entertained.

She will be remembered most of all for the way she treated others. Compassionate, generous, and unfailingly supportive, she gave of herself freely and had a wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter and warmth to those around her. Dawn had a remarkable ability to make people feel cared for, valued, and welcome.

She is survived by her siblings, Dennis, Margie, and Craig (Georgia); her godchildren, Rachael and Andrew Perius; and many beloved cousins, as well as countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

Dawn’s life will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel at Green Hills in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in memory of Dawn to the charity of your choice.
