Listen to Obituary
Brenda Guertin was born on October 19, 1948 in Madisonville, Kentucky to Clyde and Gladys Stoddard. She died on January 12, 2016 in San Pedro, California, after a valiant multi-year battle against ovarian cancer. She is survived by Edmund Guertin, her loving husband of 39 years; her cousin, Linda Gardner (Randy); and Linda's son, Tye Menser (Deyana).

Brenda earned a B.A. from California State University at Fullerton; an M.A. in English from the University of Southern California / USC; and an M.S. in Counseling from California State University at Northridge. Her professional life was focused on Higher Education, culminating in 23 years at Los Angeles Harbor College as Academic Counselor / Articulation Officer. The person holding this position is charged with establishing the curriculum agreements that allow community college graduates to transfer to appropriate 4-year colleges. The skills required include all those of a counselor, plus these: facility in research and accurate data collection; knowledge and application of California education laws; and ability to negotiate agreements fairly but firmly. At the time of her passing, she held the record as the longest-serving Articulation Officer in the history of the 9-college Los Angeles Community College District.

Brenda's varied interests included knitting, photography, drawing, and genealogy research. These were not just passing fancies. Her photographic skills, for example, drew praise from many professional Graphic Artists. She loved to travel with Ed, whether by plane, car or (especially) by cruise ship. Besides various ports of call, she and Ed spent significant time in Jamaica, Hawaii, England, Germany, Finland, Russia, Australia and Japan. She had numerous pets while growing up, but dogs, especially Malteses, were her "forever friends".
An angel on earth, her mere presence brought out the best in everyone she met!
