Listen to Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bernabe, who left us on November 2, 2025, at the age of 81 in Westwood. Born on June 11, 1944, in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, Bernabe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Growing up among seven siblings, Bernabe developed a strong sense of family that stayed with him throughout his life. After completing high school, he dedicated nearly a decade to the Mexican military, where he had the honor of serving on Robert F. Kennedy’s security detail during Kennedy's visit to Mexico in the mid-1960s. This momentous experience remained a cherished memory for him.

In 1969, Bernabe met the love of his life at a neighborhood party, and they remained inseparable ever since. In 1978, he and his family immigrated to the United States, where Bernabe embraced the challenges that came with starting anew. He worked tirelessly in various jobs, including at a shoe manufacturing plant and as a dishwasher at The Beach Comber in Marina Del Rey, before ultimately finding a fulfilling career as a lead maintenance worker at the Shangri-La Hotel. He brought his rich experience from his time as a hospital maintenance worker in Mexico to his role there, serving for 25 years until the hotel closed for remodeling. After leaving the hotel, he took on the role of a crossing guard with the City of Santa Monica, where he worked happily until his passing.

Bernabe’s passions were as diverse as his life experiences; he was a fitness enthusiast and an avid fan of Tommy's chili cheeseburgers, tacos, and seafood from the truck at 3rd and Rose. A dedicated fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, and Miami Dolphins, he enjoyed spirited discussions about sports. His joyful spirit was evident in his love for dancing and singing along to the Beatles.

Most importantly, Bernabe cherished his family, including his only daughter, three granddaughters, Amanda, Ashley, and Alyssa, and his great-grandson. He found joy in the companionship of his dogs, Minnie and Pup, who provided him with endless love and happiness.

Bernabe leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love, and devotion. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Bernabe's life will be held on December 1, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bernabe's name to a local charity dedicated to helping immigrants and supporting community services.
