Benedict Telfer Cardas July 31, 1931 – May 5, 2026
Born in Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada, Benedict Telfer Cardas passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, after bravely fighting an infection that his 94-year-old body could no longer overcome. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.
Ben was the beloved husband of the late Doris Cardas, and a devoted father to Jennifer Cardas and Jeff Cardas. He was a proud grandfather to Harlee Stutzman and Britney Arnold And great- grandkids Nathan, Bailey and Connor. He was preceded in death by his siblings Mary, Joe, Carl, Tony, and Jean, and is survived by his brother Rick and sister-in-law Autumn.
Ben grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where his passion for hockey began at a young age. He played semi-professionally in the 1950s, and after marrying Doris, moved to Southern California in 1960. His love for hockey helped bring him to Torrance in 1963 so he could be close to the Ice Rink on Western.
As a player, coach, instructor, referee, and official goal judge at the old Memorial Sports Arena, Ben dedicated countless hours to the sport he loved. He could always be found organizing or running pickup games, and he remained active in hockey well into his eighties, playing in his last tournament at age 84. He was also a 30-year season ticket holder for his favorite team, the L.A. Kings.
Beyond hockey, Ben enjoyed a 55-year career in the insurance industry and automotive sales, where he was known for his fondness for Cadillacs.
Whether you met him on the ice, the golf course, at his local Moose Lodge playing pool, or as the person who sold you a car, you gained a friend for life. He was a true gentleman with the kindest heart and soul, and he will be deeply missed. Ben loved Southern California so much that at age 81, he became a U.S. citizen, an accomplishment in which he was very proud.
