Barrie W. Anderson of Hermosa Beach, California, husband, father, friend, attorney, backpacker, and canoer departed peacefully of complications from Parkinson’s disease, January 2026.
Barrie was born to Eleanor Claire and William B. Anderson, Jr. in 1937 in New London, Connecticut. As a youth he ran track, hunted, fished, and lifeguarded. He attended Robert Fitch High School and the University of Connecticut where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, ROTC, and obtained a B.S. in Animal Husbandry.
After graduation, Barrie entered the U.S. Army attending Officer Training School in Ft. Benning, GA and then Airborne and Ranger Schools. While stationed in Germany he met his future wife Isa.
After his resignation from the military, Barrie and Isa settled down in Hermosa Beach in1969 where they raised their two daughters Karin and Krista. Barrie obtained his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 1974. In 1976, he joined the small firm of Shook, Dunkerly, Thompson and Anderson in Torrance and practiced law for over 40 years.
Barrie loved the outdoors and nature, taking annual backpacking trips with Isa into the High Sierras and the Grand Canyon, canoe trips to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, and weekly hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Barrie was a quiet man of principal with a wry sense of humor and a steadfast dedication to his family and friends. He also had a funny and mischievous streak. He and a fellow service member once risked their lives to steal bricks from the Berlin wall as it was being built in 1962, believing if everyone did it there would be no wall.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Anderson; and sister, Barbara Anderson. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Isa Anderson; daughter, Krista Anderson and son-in-law, MG Kelly; daughter, Karin Grantham and son-in-law, Steve Grantham; and by his treasured granddaughter, Tallulah Grantham. He will be missed greatly by friends and family in Arizona, Rhode Island, Germany, Austria, and Italy.
As Barrie would say at any life-affirming event, “When you ascend the hill of prosperity, may you never meet a friend”.
A private interment service will be arranged by Green Hills Memorial Park, Palos Verdes, California. A private celebration of life will also be held by the family at a later date.
