Our beloved father and grandfather “Andy” Acampora passed away surrounded by his family on November 24, 2018. He was 96 years old and a member of the “greatest generation.”
Born in 1922 in Connecticut to a large Italian family, Andy’s family came to California in 1940. During WW2 Andy flew 56 combat missions in the B24 Liberator bomber as flight engineer and top turret gunner in the South Pacific. He participated in many dangerous actions and the liberation of the Philippines.
After the war Andy graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He had a 37 year career with McDonnell Douglas Corp. His work took him and his family overseas to Italy and Switzerland where they lived for 10 years.
He was married to his wife Dorothea for 53 years until her passing in 2008. Andy was involved in many activities, he was member of the VFW, Elks Club, Friday Morning Club, Silver Sneakers Gym Class, Christ Lutheran Church and attended many reunions of his “Jolly Rogers” veteran group. Andy and Dorothea were long time residents of RPV and enjoyed traveling and going on ocean cruises.
Andy always had a cheerful nature and was friendly to everyone. He was a great dad and friend and will be missed by his family, longtime caregiver Carol, and many friends. He served his country gallantly and wrote about his life in his book, “Fears and Fortitude.”
He is survived by two sons; Martin and John, grandsons; Eric, Daniel, and Michael, granddaughter Leslie, and many great grandchildren. His wife Dorothea, son Mike Tracy, granddaughter Tammi Andersland, and parents Leopold and Maria preceded him.
